Athens-area arboretum starts to grow

[Brian Porter] and some kindred spirits were planting 48 trees Saturday and Sunday on the site just outside Athens in an effort both to demonstrate and combat the effects of climate change.

The Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust (TIWLT) is building an arboretum, or conservatory, of wide-ranging species that are not common in Eastern Ontario at the property it purchased in Glen Elbe.

Over the weekend, 25 groups of people participated in the tree planting, for a total of 75 to 80 individuals, said land trust president Don Ross.
