It’s all part of a unique program by the Employment and Education Centre to give the young people hands-on experience in the trades.
Heather Brisebois, project co-ordinator, said the budding tradespeople will develop their skills under the supervision of trade professionals and learn by doing.
At the end of the 30-week program, the youths will have learned basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring, drywalling, roofing – all of the skills that go into house construction.

Sometimes all the stars align and dream projects become reality. That’s what’s happening right now with the prototype Tiny Home that Yuergen Beck, owner of Redwood Homes 1000 Islands of Athens, is building at Algonquin College in Perth.

Currently, the township requires houses be a certain square footage; minimum house sizes currently range from 65 to 85 square metres at minimum for most zones, with an exception being a minimum of 140 square metres currently required in the “estate residential” zone.
In order to facilitate the development of tiny homes, they are proposing to remove the minimum square footage requirements for all zones except estate residential, an area where many subdivision lots are located.
The changes are part of a bylaw update, which is the continuation of a years-long process of the township’s official plan. Updating the bylaw would simply implement the details of the official plan passed in September 2018, of which the tiny home development is one.

The tiny house tucked away just outside the architecture school at Carleton University in Ottawa — and recently featured on HGTV — occupies just 180 square feet.

They asked planning director Elaine Mallory to prepare a zoning bylaw amendment that would remove the minimum size requirements for new houses, and include tiny houses in the township’s definition of permissible dwellings.
The township’s building rules now say that new houses should be at least 807 square feet in size, although houses can go as small as 484 square feet in a mobile home park.
Tiny houses, on the other hand, can run as small as 223 square feet, plus a “wash closet” in the bachelor model.
