greenwerksGreen Werks, a business unit of Team Werks Co-operative in Thunder Bay, is celebrating another successful harvest! Since 2011, the Green Werks garden has produced organically-grown vegetables and provided employment experience for consumers of mental health services.

This year’s crop was grown in a co-op garden behind the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital (LPH), and will be used in the cafeteria and catering services of St. Joseph’s hospital and the LPH. The harvest provided more than 2000 pounds of produce and gave at least seven clients meaningful employment and training opportunities as part of the St. Joseph’s Care Group Employment Options program.

While employed, clients are provided work accommodation based on their individual needs. Once they have gained the necessary confidence, skills and experience, they have the opportunity to move on to other forms of employment in the community if they choose.

In addition to providing its care facilities with seasonal vegetables and herbs, Green Werks donates a large portion of its harvest to the Regional Food Distribution Association (RFDA). In fact, they have donated more than 4000 pounds of produce since the project’s inception. Their community food project has brought them great success in being able to provide local food for their cafeteria and catering menus. However, this program provides more opportunity and valuable training opportunities for their mental health clients in addition to locally-produced food.
